Early Childhood Classes Come Together to Create Mirah's Garden
Our Early Childhood classes spent their Earth Immersion day playing outside, enjoying the sunshine, the earth, and each other. Pre-Kindergarten 3, Pre-Kindergarten 4, and Kindergarten students participated in a variety of activities, which all contributed to creating Mirah’s Garden, a lovely, peaceful space in the Tot Lot, in memory of kindergarten student Mirah Chhabra, who passed away in December.
The children, together with their teachers and parents, worked to create this beautiful space, (designed by Ms. Moran’s father, a landscape architect), which includes a garden of flowers, a stone pathway, a beautiful commemorative bench (donated by Emma and Aaron Skalka and the Victor Stanley Family), and a rock garden. To dedicate the area, the students invited their parents as well as the Chhabra family to a ceremony where they put the finishing touches on Mirah’s garden. Mrs. Sterling, Ms. Moran, and Mrs. Watson, the three teachers who had Mirah in their classes, read the book I Wish You More, by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld aloud. This book is special because Mirah chose it to donate to her sister Hanna's Pre-K 3 class. The Kindergarten class then came together to sing the song "You'll Be in My Heart" by Phil Collins. Then bubbles were distributed for families to blow together.
During the morning, friends could enjoy a some “R&R” together, eating a fresh fruit snack while reading stories about gardens and other Earth Day themes. This center was designed in remembrance of one of Mirah’s greatest joys: reading.
Art teacher Ms. Maryjo Paz led a Rock Painting activity, where families and individuals could paint bright, vibrant rocks to be placed in Mirah’s memory garden. Students also enjoyed experiencing mud, arranging flowers, and planting annuals and seeds to take home. In this immersion day, students did their own garden work with little adult supervision - a purely joyful activity. Other choices of activities during this lovely morning included assembling large floor puzzles with garden themes, making and playing with a large marble run, and creating musical instruments out of recycled materials.
