STEM Students 3D Print Prototype of Working 1899 Printing Press for "Newsies"
What do you do when you are producing a musical about the newspaper industry that takes place in 1899, and need an authentic-looking, working printing press?!? Some schools might search far and wide to try to find the perfect prop. Other schools might just go without, or make-do with a cardboard replica. But Indian Creek School turned to our greatest resource - the students - to find a solution!
When challenged to create a working printing press, Indian Creek STEM students researched the historic machine, and brainstormed together to create a design that would work best for our upcoming grades 9-12 musical production of "Newsies." Three students, senior Adam Bizri, and sophomores Olivia Boucher and Sarah Hawes, worked together to design a model and program the School's 3D printer to create a working replica upon which their design will be based. Last week, their 1899 working printing press was successfully created in the 3D printer. The students are now working to scale it to build the "life sized" version that can be used in the show.
This impressive project is an example of the ingenuity of Indian Creek students, and an incredible collaboration between the STEM program and the Performing Arts!
Mark your calendars for Indian Creek's Spring Musical "Newsies!"
