Anastasia Malamatis '24 Participates in Baltimore Ravens L.I.F.T. Conference
ICS sophomore Anastasia Malamatis '24 enjoyed an inspiring opportunity to connect with fellow Maryland female athletes and learn from an Olympian Tuesday. Anastasia participated in the Baltimore Ravens 7th Annual Leading and Inspiring Females to Thrive (L.I.F.T.) Conference. Nominated by her club lacrosse coach, Anastasia joined 150 student-athletes identified as leaders and "unsung heroes" from Maryland sports teams at the Under Armour Performance Center in Owings Mills.
This annual leadership seminar for female student-athletes is designed to empower the next generation of female student-athletes and develop their leadership skills, helping them succeed both on and off the playing field. L.I.F.T. engages the young women in conversation about how sports skills help translate to their off-field endeavors (relationships, college preparation, workplace, professional sports arena, etc.).
The athletes had an opportunity to hear from Ravens head coach John Harbaugh, as well as Olympic gold medalist, Helen Maroulis, before breaking out into an afternoon of engaging discussion.
Anastasia was especially inspired by her time with Maroulis. A native of Rockville, Maryland, Maroulis attended Magruder High School, and as a freshman, became the first female wrestler to place at the Maryland state wrestling championships. In 2016, Maroulis became the first American woman to win Olympic gold in wrestling. She followed up her historic performance with another Olympic medal in 2020, winning bronze in the Tokyo Olympics.
“The last of the three stories she told was about getting a concussion while competing in India. Her coaches told her to keep going and it took her four months to recover. She learned about taking care of her body. It made the 2020 Bronze Medal mean more than the 2016 Gold Medal because it helped her remember why she wanted to be a wrestler and it made her remember her love of the sport because she had to work back up to be able to compete again.”
The ICS community is proud of Anastasia for embracing this leadership opportunity, and can't wait to see how she continues to have a positive impact on our School in the coming years.
