Sailing Into Oblivion: Sailor Jerome Rand Shares Awe-Inspiring Story with Upper School Students
“His story was awe-inspiring."
Indian Creek Senior and Varsity Sailor Maeve Drury summarized the thoughts of the Upper School student body, after a visit from "Sailing Into Oblivion" sailor Jerome Rand. On Friday, November 16, Mr. Rand met with 7th through 12th grade students to share stories of his experience circumnavigating the world non-stop and solo on his Westsail 32 this past year.
Mr. Rand’s 29,807-mile odyssey started in Gloucester, MA, on October 3 last and took him south of the five southernmost capes—Chile’s Cape Horn, South Africa’s Cape Agulhas, Australia’s Cape Leeuwin and South East Cape, and New Zealand’s South Cape—and through the chilly, gale-lashed waters of the Southern and Indian oceans. His trip ended back in Gloucester last June after nine months at sea.
After Mr. Rand's presentation, he enjoyed lunch with the ICS Sailing Team and swapped stories of their time at sea. Maeve elaborated on this experience after their luncheon. "The persistence, bravey, and skill he presented was impressive. I could listen to him speak all day.”
