Arija Martin '21 Named Chesapeake Family Life 2018 Standout Student
Indian Creek School is proud to announce that Arija Martin '21 has been named a Chesapeake Family Life 2018 Standout Student. This award has been given to a group of nine local teens. As Chesapeake Family states, "These students who are nothing short of amazing - prove that your age does not preclude you from being a great leader, motivator, entrepreneur, philanthropist or advocate." Arija will be honored at an awards ceremony on Sunday, November 18.
Arija Martin has a heart for service and consistently steps up to better the lives of others. A 10th grader at Indian Creek School, Arija is a regular volunteer at the Light House of Annapolis, Shepard's Cove, Salvation Army, Warm Nights, Bywater Boys and Girls Club, and Calvary Womens' Services. During her freshman year at Indian Creek, Arija accumulated 45 hours of community service.
In addition to her local volunteer work, Arija is a U.S. Youth Ambassador with the U.S. Department of State and World Learning, Inc. She traveled to Brazil for a month this past summer to work in civic education, activism, community service, leadership, and social justice. During her trip, Arija volunteered with Pastoral da Crianca, a social action organization focused on the health, education, and development of children. She was also able to teach English and math to four-year-old Brazilian students, as well as learn Portuguese. She and her fellow student ambassadors visited middle and high schools where she facilitated student discussions on topics such as racism, education and respecting cultural differences. She also met with the Federal District Governor, Secretary of Education and interviewed with Brazilian press to discuss similar issues. Through her work in Brazil, Arija earned herself a paid internship with the World Learning group, which had co-sponsored the trip with the Department of State.
Arija also traveled to Toronto, Canada as a Teen Travel Ambassador through National Geographic’s Passport Party Program, where she studied the culture, provided community service to under-served citizens, and helped to expand global awareness. Arija says "Both of these study abroad opportunities have given me a better world view and inspire me to continue helping others."
In addition to her travel and global community service, Arija is a Dean's List student at Indian Creek, a Merit Scholar, a Princeton University Young Leadership Academy Scholar, a member of the Tri-M National Honor Society and currently serves in several leadership capacities. She is Teen President of the Greater Suburban Maryland Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, the sophomore Class Vice President, and holds other leadership positions at her church, inside and out of school. Arija also dances with the Capitol Movement Pre-Professional Dance Company.
Arija prides herself on being a motivator and encourager to her friends. She is passionate about using her voice to effect positive change in her community. "Whenever I have the chance,” she says, “I will always serve others. It's a huge part of who I am."
