Dr. Tommy Queen ’97 Pursues Lifelong Love of Science
As a sixth grade student in Mrs. Joan Sanders’ science class, Tommy Queen ’97 experienced a spark which led to a love of science. Today, Dr. Queen practices medicine in Colorado, focusing on therapeutic gastroenterology.
From his first visit to Indian Creek School, Dr. Queen knew that the Creek had an unrivaled learning environment: “The low student-to-teacher ratio at ICS was beneficial for me as a student. ICS is truly committed to teaching the students and providing educational opportunities for them. While there are many memories, one of my favorites would be observing the incubation and hatching of duck eggs in our science class (and taking home two baby ducks to my family).”
After his time at Indian Creek, Dr. Queen went on to high school and then the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where he originally focused on Marine Biology before switching majors to Biology (Premedical Sciences) with a Chemistry minor. Dr. Queen graduated Magna Cum Laude from UNCW and went on to medical school at Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. After medical school, Dr. Queen completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Utah, where he became Board Certified in Internal Medicine; he subsequently completed a gastroenterology fellowship at the University of New Mexico where he became Board Certified in Gastroenterology.
Currently, Dr. Queen is an advanced endoscopist at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado, after working as a clinical instructor of gastroenterology at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. While in Albuquerque, Dr. Queen received an additional year of training in advanced endoscopy focusing on novel endoscopic ultrasound and advanced endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography techniques.
When he’s not practicing medicine, he enjoys spending time with his wife and their golden retriever, Paddington, and he still has plenty of time to ski and play ice hockey.
