Lower School Celebrates International Day of Peace
Kindness, caring, friendship - These all mean peace to me.
I hope that everybody will have peace with everyone else
so that we will not have any fighting
and that we will all be friends together.
That we will be one happy nation!
Just like we should be.

Indian Creek Lower School students came together at Friday's Assembly to observe the International Day of Peace. "Peace Day" is observed around the world each year towards the end of September. Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace. The children of Indian Creek observed the day through music and stories.
The Kindergarten through second grade students opened the assembly by performing the song, "Peace, Peace, Peace" in both English and Spanish for their peers. Next, Music Teacher Ms. Blind spoke about what peace means and read the book "Paulie Pastrami Achieves World Peace," by James Proimos, while Ms. Coleman showed the illustrations on the big screen. Next, third graders Evan, Davey, and Ronan read pieces that they had written called, "What peace means to me." Next, the third grade students serenaded the audience with their rendition of "Imagine," by John Lennon.
Students and teachers took this opportunity to imagine steps that they could take every day to promote peace. Then Director of Sustainability Diana Ortiz spoke with the students about promoting peace by being good stewards of the Earth. One fact that she shared with the students is that the average human creates over 1 million pounds of garbage each year. Students learned about the importance of reducing waste, reusing objects, creating 'rot' (through composting) and recycling. Ms. Ortiz announced a new Indian Creek Eco Ambassador program for Lower School students in each grade who would like to become emvironmental leaders for their classmates. Finally, the Lower School SGA officers led the student body in the school spirit song. The Lower School Peace Day celebration inspired fun and thoughtfulness for all!
