Indian Creek Students, Faculty, Administration, and Parents Participate in AIMS “Making Schools Safe” Diversity Conference
Indian Creek was well-represented at the AIMS “Making Schools Safe” Diversity Conference, which took place at Roland Park Country School on Friday, February 2. This conference focuses on LGBTQ topics at independent Maryland schools. Seven students (ranging from seventh to eleventh grades), six members of the faculty and administration, and one parent represented Indian Creek at the conference.
The theme of the conference was “Where Have We Been and Where Are We Going?” Both the students and adults heard from the AIMS board members who founded the conference 20 years ago as well as current high school seniors. Indian Creek Head of School Dr. Rick Branson and ICS parent Jodie Miller presented a session title “Model Response to Gender Transition,” which was especially well-received. The conference closed with an engaging keynote and Q&A with Jabari Lyles, Chairperson and Education Manager for GLSEN Baltimore.
Another highlight of the conference was a breakout session in which students discussed case studies with students from other schools, and teachers and administrators discussed the same case studies with other adults who worked with the same age of student. Our students enjoyed meeting and making connections with other students from different schools, and teachers found it valuable to talk with colleagues from schools across Maryland.
The AIMS “Making Schools Safe” Conference was a valuable and successful learning experience for all.
