"Best Lab Ever!" Third Grade Students Investigate Biology through Fish Lab

"Do we have oxygen masks?" "I'm trying really hard not to get grossed out." "This is the best STEM lab ever!"

These comments were heard, among many other entertaining exclamations, as the Indian Creek third grade students participated in their Fish Lab. This lab is a rite of passage for Indian Creek third grade students. Each lab group gets a fish to dissect together in order to learn more about the biology of a fish. Students looked for trademark characteristics in order to identify the fish type. They then completed the lab report about the habitat of their fish and what they eat. As the lab progressed, the students turned towards identifying, defining, and labeling the functions of each body part. The Class of 2028 put on their goggles, rolled up their sleeves, and became true scientists as they investigated the biology of the bay.
