TOPICS Troupe Tackles the Great Works of Neil Simon

"TOPICS" stands for "Theater of Purpose at Indian Creek School. The purpose of this group is to provide performing arts opportunities for students that are deep, meaningful, and in support of the School's fall production.  This year's TOPICS actors showcased the writing talents of Neil Simon, one of America's premier playwrights and humorists, in conjunction with the fall production of Simon's "Lost in Yonkers."

On Friday, November 9, the troupe held a special dinner theater event before opening night of the play, where they presented comedic scenes from Simon's works. CAST Volunteer parents collaborated with SAGE Dining to set the scene for an enchanting theater experience. The Atrium was decorated to throw back to 1940s New York City, and SAGE created a menu of New York deli-inspird fare including Chef Eric's home-made pastrami sandwiches, mini matzo ball soups, and authentic cheese blintzes. An ice cream sundae and floats bar added the finishing touches as the audience enjoyed the TOPICS production.

Ava Rouse '21 and John Patrick Reilly '20 opened the evening with a poignant performance of "Proposals."  This was followed by the dissonant "Plaza Suite," performed by A.J. DePaolis '22 and Jordyne Hebron '20.  Next came a series of Simon's most notable monologues: "The Gingerbread Lady" by John Patrick, "I Ought to Be in Pictures" by Annabelle Derrick '21, A.J., and Ava. Annabelle and Matt Hawes '21 excellent portrayed the sweet "Biloxi Blues," and then Kahlil Williams '19 and Sean Gerety '20 lightened the tone with "Laughter on the 23rd Floor."

TOPICS teachers Brad Woodward and Mariana Mahoney '13 were extraordinarily proud of their troupe. "I am so impressed with the performances and progress of the TOPICS troupe this year. Their presentation of scenes from Neal Simon received accolades from both faculty and peers. The students did superior work in both polishing their acting skills and their script analysis. Hopefully, the success of this year's TOPICS experience will lead to more opportunities for the program in the future."

TOPICS 2018 provided exactly the experience that was envisioned for this program. The students took on the lofty challenge of works from great American playwright Neil Simon and their performances made the School proud.
