Second Grade Students Code Robot Travel through Ellis Island in Innovative Immigration Studies

Second grade social studies classes are studying American Immigration in new and innovative ways! This week, the Class of 2028 worked as small groups to virtually visit Ellis Island, using the iPads. Through this method of study, the children were able to listen to actual audio recordings of immigrants who entered there, view actual photographs and films of early immigration, and read about the process through Ellis Island. After conducting this reserach, the students created their own “floor mats” which mirrored the actual floor plan of Ellis Island, and drew pictures or wrote some text, reflecting their own perspective on the Ellis Island experience. Next, the students coded a Blue Bot robot "immigrant" to travel through Ellis Island. The students are currently filming these travels, while narrating the process from the voice of the robot immigrant.
