Caroline Walworth ‘ 18 Named a Maryland's Top Youth Volunteer Of 2018
Indian Creek senior Caroline Walworth of Stevensville, Maryland, was named a Maryland Top Youth Volunteer of 2018 Distinguished Finalist by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism.
Caroline was recognized for her work leading a camp for tweens and teenagers in Romania. Caroline (along with her twin sister Tory) has spent her last two summers designing and implementing activities for 120 kids to promote creativity, leadership and team-building. Caroline's "Transylvania Leadership Camp" also served the remote mountain village where it was based, leading campers on routine hikes to visit with local senior citizens and provide them with clothes and other essentials. In addition to developing this leadership program for Romanian teenagers and working as lead counselor at the camp, Caroline has represented that program at the Romanian Embassy in Washington, DC, and also recruited other American teens to work as counselors at the camp.
Caroline’s work in Transylvania is only one aspect of her spirit of volunteerism. As a sophomore, Caroline was asked to represent Indian Creek School on the Board of Directors of the Chrysalis House, a drug and alcohol residential addiction treatment center in Crownsville, Maryland. Caroline has served on the development committee and holds the position of Secretary on the Board for the past two years. She also tutors young children who live at the treatment center with their mothers after school. Over the past two years, Caroline has developed and organized several new activities to bring the residents of Chrysalis House and their children together with the students at Indian Creek. She has invited Chrysalis House residents and their children to the dress rehearsals of theater shows at the school, created a Halloween costume drive at the school for the kids at Chrysalis House, and brought in four graduated clients of the Chrysalis House to speak in front of the ICS student body on their recovery from substance abuse. Last fall, she organized a Fall Fest Variety Show Fundraiser, incorporating acts from Indian Creek School Students and acts from the Chrysalis House mothers and their children. Not only did this event raise awareness for the Chrysalis House and raise funds for their daycare program, it also brought our two communities together for an evening of entertainment and celebration.
Outside of school, Caroline has also served as a three year volunteer at Bountiful Blessings, a food pantry that also gives household and personal necessities not covered by food stamps to low-income families on the Eastern Shore, and been a counselor at Vacation Bible School, an educational summer program for children at Kent Island’s Christ Church. Last summer, Caroline was chosen from among many applicants to attend the Kenyon Review Young Writers Workshop, a competitive writing program at Kenyon College.
Caroline keeps herself involved in all aspects of life at Indian Creek as well. She has played on the Varsity Field Hockey team for four years, and is an esteemed member of the National Honor Society, the French Honor Society, and the Art Honor Society. She has also served as an officer in student government for all four years of Upper School, first as Freshman Class President, then Sophomore Class Vice President, all-school Treasurer her junior year, and all-school Vice President her senior year. She has taken 10 AP classes, and maintains a 4.0+ GPA.
