Senior Spotlight: Portia Fernandes
Portia Fernandes possesses the spirited voice heard throughout the ICS hallways on the athletic fields and the bright smile that brings together her class and school community. These qualities will serve her well as she continues her studies at American University this fall.
At Indian Creek, Portia has played on the volleyball team for four years—winning Most Improved Player as a junior—the tennis team for two years, and she played lacrosse as a senior, helping the Eagles to their recent IAAM championship. She’s been in the dance group for two musicals, "Newsies" and "Brigadoon," and she’s been a student ambassador for open houses every year throughout high school.
She credited one of her teachers for instilling a love for a subject she never thought she’s enjoy. “My favorite class that I have taken at the Creek has been biology my junior year with the famous and hilarious, Mrs. Roth,” said Fernandes. “Through many projects and meetings, I have grown to love a class that I thought I never thought would.”
When asked about her favorite ICS memory, Fernandes recalls her class’s famous Creek Cup lip-sync performance. “One of my favorite memories was performing in front of the whole school for Creek Cup junior year for the lip sync battle, and dancing to "Bye Bye Bye" by NYSNC,” she said. “Though we didn't end up winning, it was definitely a memory for the books.”
