Years of hard work and dedication to pursuing her academic passions paid off this week, as Sarah Hawes committed to study at Cornell University's College of Engineering next year. While she is currently planning to major in electrical and computer engineering at Cornell, Hawes remains open-minded and looks forward to explore other STEM fields. Her experience at Indian Creek has shown her that she can achieve her goals through diligent work with teachers passionate to see their students succeed.
“During high school, I learned that I really wanted to pursue a STEM-based career since I like math and science,” said Hawes. “Indian Creek's STEM program allowed me to apply my passion in math and science to various projects, including endothermic vs. exothermic reactions and geomagnetic activity’s effects on GPS receivers. My favorite classes include physics with Mr. Klakring and Mr. McNally, government with Mr. Sheppard, and an engineering GOA (Global Online Academy) course with Dr. Kendall.”
A founding member of the Eagles Varsity Volleyball team, Sarah helped lead the team to the 2018 IAAM championship in the program’s first season. “I am very proud of [playing for the volleyball team], especially for winning a championship as a new team.”
Reflecting on her eight years at ICS, Sarah shares that her relationships with her teachers have been invaluable. “My favorite part about Indian Creek is that it is supportive, and the teachers take their time to make sure we understand if we are confused about a concept we learned in class,” said Hawes.
