ICS Students and Administrators Featured on Panel at Leadership Anne Arundel Education Day

Leadership Anne Arundel Education Day 2021 featured seven speakers from area independent schools, including five from Indian Creek School (ICS).  On Thursday, January 14, nearly 40 leaders from a variety of public and private sectors gathered over Zoom to learn about education in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. ICS Director of College Counseling Maggie Melson serves on the Education Day planning committee, and made it a priority to share information about independent schools.

The Association of Independent Maryland and DC Schools (AIMS) shared an overview of features specific to independent schools, as well as helpful data about private schools in Anne Arundel County. AIMS officers Alecia Berman-Dry and Sharon Bogdan enjoyed the opportunity to speak with county leaders. A session about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) featured an Anne Arundel County Public Schools leader and Indian Creek's Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Mr. Douglass McCuiston, who shared information about DEI efforts at ICS.

Three ICS seniors spoke to the local leaders in a panel moderated by Mrs. Melson. Annabelle Derrick highlighted the flexibility provided by Indian Creek to encourage students to pursue their academic interests in depth, including her founding of Mu Alpha Theta, the School's National Math Honor Society. She also explained that she has taken classes at Anne Arundel Community College since she was in eighth grade when she took her first American Sign Language class. Levi Kline reflected upon some of his favorite memories during his 13 years at ICS. He appreciates the ways in which ICS faculty and staff encourage him to try new things and to do his best. Arija Martin celebrated the opportunities to participate in athletics, arts, and academics as well as being able to found the first Black Student Alliance (BSA). All three seniors expressed appreciation for how Indian Creek is handling school during Covid-19 and emphasized how well-prepared they each feel for college and beyond.
