Kindergarten Plants Garden and Sees Friendships Blossom

This week, the Indian Creek Class of 2033 experienced the joys of gardening and of friendship, as they shared a story and planted a class garden together.

The Kindergarten students, together with their teachers Ms. Lynann Derrick and Ms. Alexis deBorja '14 read the childrens' book Just Ask, written by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and illustrated by Rafael. Through this story, students discovered that in the same way that different types of plants and flowers make a garden more beautiful and enjoyable, different types of people make our world more vibrant and wonderful. As the kids in the story work together to build a community garden, asking questions of each other along the way, the book encourages its readers to do the same: When we come across someone who is different from us but we're not sure why, all we have to do is Just Ask.

The Kindergarten class read the story, and talked about many of the unique traits that individuals have that make them special.  Then the students went outside in small groups to dig in the dirt, plant their seeds, and water their garden.  Insect and worm sightings added excitement to the class project.  These shared experiences provided the basis for friendships to blossom as well!
