Maeve Drury '19 Recognized for "Caring for Cambodia" Efforts

Indian Creek senior Maeve Drury has been recognized by the Caring for Cambodia organization for her fundraising and awareness efforts to support the cause. Maeve's "Creek for Cambodia" movement has given Indian Creek students the opportunity to help support this worthy cause. The article below is featured on the Caring for Cambodia website:

Maeve Drury Starts "Creek for Cambodia" Movement
Five years ago, then seventh-grader Maeve Drury (photographed at right in orange shirt) spent a week volunteering at CFC schools with her extended family, and she couldn't shake the impact it had on her. She remembers the extreme heat while painting school buildings and serving breakfast to CFC students. She remembers eating everything that had to do with mangos, and she remembers the vibrant art she saw at every turn. Even more, she remembers connections she and her family made with students - like the students who, despite the language barrier, played a Star Wars game with her younger cousin, or the little boy who stood on her feet and told her he wanted to be tall like her one day. The trip made her realize, as she puts it: "Kids are kids, they're all the same, and they have the same needs; and even kids with nothing can still smile."

Within a week of returning to her home in Crownsville, Maryland, Maeve was talking with her teachers at Indian Creek School about raising money to help. She organized bake sales and 'dress-down days' as well as pizza and ice cream sales. This year, in her fourth year of fundraising, Maeve wanted to go 'all-out' in honor of her beloved grandmother who had recently passed away. "My grandmother had spent her life caring for others, so I decided I wanted to go full-throttle for her!" Maeve added an online fundraiser through CFC's website to her typical efforts and raised over USD$1200! (To support Maeve's fundraiser, please click here.)

To talk to Maeve is to know that she is an observant, motivated leader at her school who knows how to get things done, but she is the first to say that she has needed a team to make this all happen! So, hats off to Colleen Shrum '19, Megan Tempkin '19, Hailey O'Connor '18, Mariam Bizri '20, Reese Fortier '20 and the whole Indian Creek School community for your ongoing support and generosity! And very special thanks to Maeve's aunt, JeriAnn Conaty, a longtime CFC supporter who, four years ago, thought Maeve and her family might benefit from some time at the CFC schools.
