Student Spotlight: Shane Brown '28

Sponsored by the Machemer family, the Creek Lab was opened last year and has become a hub of immersive learning for the entire school. Containing four 3D printers, a laser cutter, a large-scale printer, machining and electronics tools, as well as  workspaces, a touch board, and more, the lab is utilized by every grade. Lower School classes build and tinker, Middle Schoolers learn design and printing, and Upper School science labs all take turns in the space. Open lab time allows for projects (like Shane’s) to take shape and grow.

Not only is Shane using the Creek Lab equipment to its fullest, but he has also taken initiative to request new equipment for the lab. “I requested the resin printer, and I’ve set it up. Once I have all the kinks worked out in my prototype, I will print my final design. That way I have something that is more durable.”

Shane credits STEM teacher Mr. Glenn Klakring for assigning an inspiring ninth grade project that led him to discover his passion for naval engineering and architecture, Engineering teacher Mr. Doug McNally for supplying Arduino boards and other supplies for the electronics portion of the project, and IT Coordinator Ms. Jenae Gates for showing him how to use all the printers in the lab.

Dreams of a functional, affordable submarine (with a claw!) continue to motivate Shane. “You know, some students could easily do research on movements of fish if you mount a camera or take soil samples from the bottom of the lake with a claw attachment.” Shane is determined to keep the price point down, with accessibility and affordability key components.

Shane knew that building a fully functional submarine from scratch would be an ambitious challenge. He sits, holding his original prototype and laughs. “Last year was more of a boat than a submarine. This year I’m trying to give it actual purpose.” His work demonstrates how creativity and accessible technology can transform ideas into real-world solutions with significant impact.
