Indian Creek School Announces Comprehensive Campus and Enrollment Expansion Plan

Indian Creek School has announced an ambitious five-year campus and enrollment growth plan designed to enhance the student experience across academics, arts, and athletics while preserving the distinctive character of the Creek community.

Approved by the Indian Creek School Board of Trustees after months of careful study and deliberation, the plan outlines a phased approach to campus development and enrollment growth that builds on the momentum of the School’s 2024 Strategic Plan.

“This initiative is about preserving and strengthening what makes the Creek the Creek,” said Booth Kyle, Head of School. “It’s about enhancing student experiences at every grade level, supporting outstanding teaching and learning, and ensuring the long-term vitality of Indian Creek School for generations to come.”

The five-year plan focuses on three closely connected priorities:
  • Mission-aligned enrollment growth that responds to sustained demand while maintaining small class sizes and strong student-teacher relationships
  • Renovation and reimagining of existing campus spaces to expand instructional capacity and strengthen visual and performing arts programs
  • Construction of a new athletics center to support teaching, learning, and student life across grades PK–12
Indian Creek’s rapid progress across all four pillars of its 2024 Strategic Plan — academic excellence, storytelling and community engagement, financial sustainability, and campus expansion — has positioned the School to move forward sooner than originally anticipated.

The first phase of construction is slated to begin in spring 2027 and will focus on strengthening the School’s academic and arts footprints. Planned improvements include the addition of up to ten classrooms, expanded visual and performing arts spaces, and a refreshed Auditorium.

These enhancements will allow Indian Creek to responsibly grow enrollment while elevating the student experience, particularly in the arts.

As part of this phase, the Lower School will expand to include a second classroom of approximately 15 students per grade in Pre-K through grade 3, joining grades 4 and 5, which already operate with two sections. This growth will begin in the 2027–28 school year with Pre-K and Kindergarten and will continue in a phased rollout through grade 3. The expansion will increase Lower School enrollment by approximately 50 students and is designed to reduce class sizes, improve student-teacher ratios, and enhance social and collaborative opportunities within each grade.

The second phase of construction, expected to begin in 2029, will introduce a new, state-of-the-art athletics center. Planned features include a gymnasium, an ice hockey rink, a student center, and additional Upper School classrooms. The facility is intended to support Upper School students in particular, offering a dynamic, multi-building campus experience and creating an athletics program that will be unrivaled in Anne Arundel County.
With the start of this phase, Indian Creek plans to initiate enrollment growth in grades 6–12, adding up to 100 students over time.

A notable highlight of the plan is the return of ice hockey to Indian Creek. Previously offered from 2007 to 2013 as a boys sport, hockey is expected to return as a permanent program for both boys and girls with the addition of the School’s own rink.

When fully realized, Indian Creek School will be equipped to serve approximately 750 students, supported by expanded academic spaces and exceptional arts and athletics facilities, all while maintaining the close-knit campus culture that defines the Creek experience.

The Board of Trustees’ approval authorizes the School to move into the research and planning phases, including engagement with architects and consultants this winter and spring. Initial concepts and renderings are expected to be shared with the community by the start of the next school year.

“These investments are not just about buildings,” Booth added. “They are about the daily experiences, expanded opportunities, and sense of belonging they create for our students and faculty. This is a meaningful commitment to our community and to the future of Indian Creek School.”
