Time-Traveling through History! Third Grade Experiences Colonial Life

On Thursday, May 1, the ICS Class of 2034 stepped back in time by taking a field trip to Historic London Town and Gardens and the William Paca House and Garden.

At Londown Town, students donned colonial-era clothing and explored the early settlement. A highlight of the trip was the Carpenter Shop, where students learned and tried 18th-century woodworking techniques. The third graders had the opportunity to act as colonial woodworkers, carving their own piece of wood and using a long-handled tool to drill a hole—just like craftsmen would have done in the past. The Carpenter Shop is a reconstruction based on early Chesapeake architecture, featuring a unique M-shaped roof designed to handle rainwater runoff.

From London Town, the class traveled to the William Paca House, a beautifully restored Georgian mansion in Annapolis. The house belonged to William Paca, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and a former governor of Maryland. Here, students enjoyed exploring the historic home and gardens, gaining a better understanding of colonial life, architecture, and the legacy of one of Maryland’s founding leaders.

This trip provided a valuable experience for the third grade class to immerse themselves in their Colonial American studies.
