Girls' Night Out Provides Friday Night Fun for Seventh through Twelfth Grade Students
The Indian Creek Equity and Inclusion Team sponsored a Girls’ Night Out event for Upper School students on Friday, October 5. The goal of this evening, which was planned and led by juniors Jordyne Hebron and Zikora Irono, was to build connections between students who identify as female in order to create a supportive school environment.
Girls’ Night Out was a great success! Over 30 seventh and eighth grade students (over half of the girls in those grades) attended and were grouped with almost 20 ninth through twelfth grade student mentors and five faculty chaperones. Together, the older and younger Creekers participated in trust building activities, big-little sister sharing opportunities, games a craft, discussion breakout groups about how girls can help to lift each other up, a craft, and a group reflection. The evening concluded with each girl contributing to a poster of “I AM” statements to help each girl own her beauty and strength.
During the reflection period at the end of the evening, the seventh and eighth grade girls shared a united theme of feeling more included and more a part of the community than before. The girls all shared that they would now feel more comfortable in the hallways at school, knowing the older girls were kind and approachable. This was a favorite part of the evening for the older mentors and faculty chaperones.
Faculty chaperone Maggie Melson shared, “We are very fortunate to be part of a school community in which young women in grades 9-12 care about planning an empowerment event for girls in grades 7-8These positive and strong young women give me hope for our future!” Indian Creek girls of all ages are looking forward to the next Girls’ Night Out event!
