The Indian Creek Eagles went on the road the evening of Monday, September 10, to play the only High School field hockey team in Prince George's County: the Elizabeth Seton Roadrunners. The weather was a nice break from last week's scorcher and there was even a delightful mist making the field extra quick for the 4:00 p.m. start.
The Eagles came ready to play and got on the board early with a goal by Maddy Evans '19 assisted by Elàn Martin '22. The Roadrunners were not to go gently, however, and had quite a few fast breaks led by freshman lightning bolt Callahan Day. Unfortunately for Ms. Day, center back Liz Foster '20 and goalkeeper Kendyl Underwood '20 coordinated their efforts well and were able to keep the Eagles goal clear for the day.
For much of the game Ellie Sharma '21 was an offensive catalyst on the right side and it was only fitting that hard running forward Sonia Homick '20 got the second goal of the game by putting in a beautiful cross from Sharma to close out the 1st half 2-0.
The second half saw the Eagles improve on defense with some strong block tackling from Kylie McLay '22, Paige Wells '19, and Olivia Maisano '21 which fueled several counterattacks led by the selfless leads of Lauren Bode '19 and Ava Rouse '21. After two more goals: Maisano unassisted and Homick assisted by Martin, it was Sharma who closed out the scoring with a well struck penalty corner from the top of the circle to the lower left side boards to finish the game at 5-0 in favor of the Eagles.
The Eagles are back in action on Tuesday the 18th, when they travel to IAAM rival Glenelg Country School. Go Eagles!
