Grace Walworth '20 Wins Cappies of Baltimore Award for Best Actress in a Play
On Sunday, May 20 members of the cast and crew of Indian Creek's The Heidi Chronicles, along with legions of their fans, attended the annual Cappies of Baltimore Gala. The Cappies are a nationwide organization that sends teams of critics from regional member high schools to fellow member schools' plays and musicals. Cappies Critics write reviews for several shows in a season and also vote on several awards categories for the year. The awards mimic the Tony Awards in that they recognize technical aspects such as lights and sound, as well as choreography, songs, actors, etc. Gowns and tuxes abound.
One of the favorite aspects of the Baltimore Gala is that each member school performs an excerpt from the show they produced that year on the stage at the Hippodrome in Baltimore in front of an audience numbering in the thousands. It's an exhilarating experience for the performers.
This year, Indian Creek Upper School's production, The Heidi Chronicles, and its critic team were nominated nine times in eight categories, three were writing categories for critics (Lead and Rising critic) and the remaining five were in acting categories. Although Creek only went one for eight, it was for one of the biggest awards of the night. Sophomore Grace Walworth '20 won Best Actress in a Play for her portrayal of Heidi Holland in The Heidi Chronicles. Anyone who saw her mastery of such a demanding leading role knew there could be no other choice for the Cappies award.
Congratulations to Grace for this prestigious award, and kudos to the cast and crew of The Heidi Chronicles and Indian Creek's Cappies Critic team!
