Sydney Williams '18 Named Runner Up for 2018 Maryland Youth of the Year
Indian Creek Senior Sydney Williams was honored as a finalist for 2018 Youth of the Year at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County’s 29th Annual Ed Casey Youth of the Year Awards dinner on Wednesday, April 4, at The Westin Hotel, in Annapolis. Sydney, who won the Youth of the Year award in 2017, was named runner-up at the awards dinner for this year's honor.
Sydney is a member of the Indian Creek STEM Program, and has been a four-year member of the ICS Student Government Association. She belongs to three honor societies, plus she is on the Board of Directors and the Secretary of Chrysalis House, a residential treatment program for female substance abusers. She is also a member of the Board of the Maryland Youth Advisory Council.
At the Bywater Boys & Girls Club, she is a Junior Staff member during the summers and vacation breaks, usually as a camp counselor.
An athlete, she plays soccer, basketball and lacrosse for Indian Creek. By the end of the spring season, she will have 12 varsity letters. Her junior year, Williams was among 70 area students selected for The Capital-Gazette 2017 Outstanding Student Achievers Awards.
Her post-college goal is to become an obstetrician. “I was in the room when a cousin was born and, at the age of nine, it inspired me,” she said.
Williams was excited to be nominated for Youth of the Year for the second year in a row. “Being able to represent the Club is a big responsibility. You have to understand you are a person a lot of children look up to. They need a positive role model. This is a great experience. Thank you for the opportunity,” she said. Congratulations Sydney!
