Eighth Grade Environmental Project Empowers Students to Create Lasting Impact

At Indian Creek School, hands-on learning and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. With support from a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust, students have brought new life to the School’s outdoor learning spaces by planting native species that benefit local ecosystems.

Earlier this year, tenth-grade students began the project by planting seeds in preparation for spring at Providence of Maryland. This week, eighth-grade students built on that foundation by planting over 60 native species, including milkweed, cardinal flowers, Virginia bluebells, and little bluestem. These plants will bloom throughout the year, adding seasonal beauty and enhancing biodiversity around the school's pavilion.

This work will continue at the upcoming Rooted & Rising event on Sunday, May 18, at 10:00 a.m., where the community is invited to come celebrate the dedication of Indian Creek's new outdoor learning pavilion, help plant goldenrod and wild bergamot. The event will also feature a local market, hands-on environmental activities, and a special giveaway: the first 50 families will receive a free milkweed plant to take home and support pollinators, plus much more!

Indian Creek is proud to empower students to create lasting environmental impact through meaningful, immersive learning.
