Varsity Boys Soccer Defeats Jemicy 5-0
On Thursday, October 4, the Indian Creek Varsity Boys Soccer team defeated Jemicy 5-0 behind a brace of goals from freshman Sudan Wilson-Gumbs and a goal and two assists by junior Michael Mercer.
Wilson-Gumbs started the scoring in the eighth minute of the game when he scored an unassisted goal that caromed off the bottom of the crossbar and into the upper ninety of the Jemicy goal. Senior co-captain Carter Mullin scored another unassisted goal when he beat two Viking defenders and smashed to ball past the keeper at the near post to give the Eagles a 2-0 halftime lead.
The first goal of the second half was another Wilson-Gumbs strike off an assist from Mercer who had poked a great cross from freshman Danny Swope into space behind the last Viking defender for Wilson-Gumbs to rifle towards the far post with his left foot. The Eagles then went through a long drought as they generated multiple scoring opportunities that failed to find the back of the net. Finally, in the last six minutes of the match, the Eagles got on track when Swope collected a ball played to the right corner and made a run along the end line, beating one Viking defender with the dribble before calmly laying off the ball for Mercer to blast past the keeper from about 10 yards out. The last goal came with about three minutes to go when Mercer hit a corner kick that found an unmarked Ronan Fanning who headed it in to make the final score 5-0 in favor of the Creek.
It was a relatively uneventful game for Eagles keeper John Warner who saw only four Viking shots all game and made two saves. The Jemicy keeper had a strong game with nine saves as the Eagles took 22 shots. ICS is now 3-3 overall (3-3 in the MIAA C Conference) and next faces the Glenelg Dragons at home for a 6:00 p.m. game under the lights on Monday, October 8.
