Fifth Grade Safety Patrol Trains at Fire Department Academy

On Tuesday, May 17, members of the ICS Fifth Grade Safety Patrol were invited to visit the Anne Arundel County Fire Department Academy.

During their visit, the students - along with Safety Patrol Advisor Mrs. Kornmeyer - were escorted through the academy yard to see where and how firefighters train to do their job of helping to keep our county residents safe. The students tried on helmets and gear, and then climbed a ladder to go through a window and make their way through a dark maze to experience a fire rescue simulation.  They  learned how sprinkler systems and hydrants work and were able to ask questions of how firefighters do their jobs. Many conversations were had about the importance of being safe, knowing one's address and cross streets and what to do in case of an emergency.

ICS Safety Patrol students also had the opportunity to see where and how 911 calls are taken and what happens behind the scenes when a call comes in. They left the Academy and 911 Call Center with a better understanding of the many awesome ways firefighters help and train.
