Last week, the Indian Creek sixth grade students and their parents kicked off the Annual Family Read project, where parents and students enjoy the experience of bonding together over a good book.
Sixth grade students and their parents visited the Vos Family Academic Resource Center to browse their selections and choose a novel to read together. This year's book options included Rules by Cynthia Lord, Ungifted by Gordon Korman, I, Emma Freke by Elizabeth Atkinson, Small as an Elephant by Jennifer Jacobson, Things Not Seen by Andrew Clements, Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper, Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, and Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. The books came packaged with a goody bag to inspire cozy evenings of reading together. Over the next few weeks, the parents and students will read their chosen novel together and then participate in an online book discussion with other ICS families who read the same book, along with Literature teacher Ms. Erika Strickland.
After their engaging on-line book discussions, students will complete trifold posters that highlight their book, in the hopes that their classmates will venture out and select another book based on the many book recommendations. Students and parents will celebrate the completion of the project and debrief about the experience at a Family Read breakfast in December.
The Sixth Grade Family Read project is a wonderful opportunity for students and parents to share with one another and learn how to listen and reflect upon different points of view.
