Third Grade Astronomy Projects are Out of this World!
Wednesday, March 10, was an exciting day for the Class of 2030, as they culminated their Astronomy studies by sharing capstone projects with their parents and peers at an Independent Learning Day (ILD). This event was especially poignant this year, as it marked the first time that parents had the opportunity to come to campus to see their students' work. To welcome their guests, the third grade strings group serenaded morning carpool with an outdoor concert before the ILD presentations.
After weeks of studying aspects of space as a class, each third grade student chose one aspect of the field of astronomy to delve deeper into. Students conducted independent research on topics such as black holes, the solar system, the Milky Way galaxy, dwarf planets, and more. As they learned more about their subjects, the students chose a way to share their knowledge with others, through dioramas, posters, models, or even in the form of a cake! Then they spent several days creating their projects, and writing a full report on their subjects.
On Wednesday, the students displayed their projects on the Evergreen Campus fields, and invited their parents to attend a physically-distant presentation, where guests had the opportunity to view the projects and ask the scholars questions about their new areas of expertise. Thanks to the hard work of the third grade students and teachers, the final event was "out of this world!"
