Indian Creek, Severn School, and Key School Students Hold Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Symposium
On Tuesday, April 21, 21 students and four adults from Indian Creek School, Severn School, and Key School held a virtual symposium to discuss topics centering around diversity, equity, and inclusion. This meet-up for students from the three Anne Arundel County independent schools was originally planned as an in-person lunch meeting, but the meeting smoothly transitioned to a virtual platform.
The students started by providing a snapshot of the diversity, equity, and inclusion work at each of their schools. They then moved into virtual breakout rooms, which gave more students a chance to share. In these spaces, students discussed both their successes and challenges and how the schools can teach and support each other in this important work.
At the end of the meeting, several participants expressed the hope that this meeting would be the first step towards a continuing relationship between the student, faculty, and administrative leaders in equity and inclusion work across the schools. The group plans to meet again to continue their conversation, both virtually while the campuses are closed and in person when the campuses are open. As one of the organizing teachers shared, “Even though we reside in different places, we are partners in this work.”
