AIMS Historically Black Colleges and Universities Seminar Engages Indian Creek Students

Finding the perfect college fit for every student is an important piece of the Indian Creek experience, and the College Counseling office seeks to educate students on the wide variety of opportunities available to them after graduation. On Monday, November 5, a group of Indian Creek students, parents, and administrators traveled to Garrison Forest School to learn about the unique benefits of attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).  The Association of Independent Maryland and DC Schools (AIMS) hosted the event designed to help students, families, and independent school leaders in our region to understand some of the benefits of attending one of the many excellent HBCUs. A panel of leaders who currently work at an HBCU or who graduated from one spoke about personal experiences at Bowie State University, Howard University, Morgan State University, Spelman College, and Xavier University of Louisiana.

According to Indian Creek’s Instructional Technology Coordinator and Equity & Inclusion Team Member Doug McCuiston, “It was a really good first step into the opportunities that HBCUs can offer students. There was a good variety of institutions and representatives who were able to convey the importance and purpose of HBCUs.” Mr. McCuiston attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga. Another parent who brought her students to the event commented "This event was much needed for our Creek students interested in attending HBCU's. The wealth of information and clarity provided made this event well worth attending.” LaShaun Martin also shared “My two Creekers were most stuck by the overwhelming feeling that HBCU's 'Love students of color into success.' Thank you to ICS for seeing the needs of all of our children and making this event available to us."
