Eagles Dominate in 2-0 Win over Chapelgate Christian

On Thursday, September 20, the Indian Creek Varsity Boys Soccer team beat Chapelgate Christian 2-0 on the strength of a first-half Chapelgate own-goal and a second-half header by junior midfielder Sam Tator.

The Eagles dominated the run of play for large stretches of both halves but struggled to put the ball in the back of the net despite numerous shots on goal. The ball finally went in for the Creek in the 31st minute of the match when senior co-captain Carter Mullin launched a cross from just outside the left side of the box into the danger area about 7-8 yards out that was mis-headed by the defending Yellow Jacket centerback into his own goal. The half finished 1-0 in the Eagles favor.

The second half saw the Creek possess the ball for much of the play but fail to generate as many shots as in the first half. Chapelgate pushed back with some dangerous balls forward, but all attacks were contained by the Indian Creek back four and keeper John Warner. Holding on to a slim 1-0 lead, the Eagles were looking for that insurance goal. It finally arrived in the 35th minute when freshman Sudan Wilson-Gumbs earned a direct free kick about 10 yards outside the right corner of the penalty area. Senior co-captain Collin Brown took the resulting free kick, putting the ball into the 6-yard box where it found the head of Tator for the final score of the game.

The Eagles finished with 15 shots on goal versus three shots for Chapelgate. Keeper Warner had two saves for the Creek while the Yellow Jacket keeper had seven in a losing effort. Corners were 5 to 0 in favor of the Eagles. ICS is now 2-1 overall (2-1 in C conference play). The Eagles host Mt. Carmel under the lights tomorrow night at 6 pm.
