The Class of 2021 Takes New York City!

The Indian Creek School Class of 2021 took Manhattan – and the rest of New York City, during their 2018 Class Trip! The students packed a variety of enriching and exhilarating experiences into their two days in the Big Apple on September 12-13. The students’ first stop was a visit to the Met’s Cloisters, a branch of the Museum dedicated to the art, architecture, and gardens of medieval Europe, which overlooks the Hudson River. The students enjoyed this visit, and were lucky enough to see the “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” exhibit. The purpose of this exhibit which features articles of clothing rarely seen outside of the Vatican, is to explore fashion's ongoing engagement with the devotional practices and traditions of Catholicism.

From the Cloisters, the students had the opportunity to tour Radio City Music Hall, where they got to meet a Rockette and try out some dance steps in the Rockette’s rehearsal space. An unexpected highlight of the tour occurred as students got to explore the hydraulics system in basement of the Hall, which was kept “secret” during World War I.

After dinner, students attended a performance of the Tony-award winning Broadway musical “Dear Evan Hansen.” This production centers around the social and emotional struggles of growing up, deals with the themes of parent-child relationships, suicide, honesty, friendship, and social media, among many others, in ways that had students and teachers laughing and crying – often at the same time. “I didn’t expect the show to have such an emotional impact on me,” shared Annie ’21. “I just didn’t want anything bad to happen to Evan Hansen.”

Day two in the city was just as full as the first day, as students volunteered at the Food Bank of New York City for the morning. (Read more about this experience here.) After lunch, the students participated in a scavenger hunt around Central Park, which gave them the opportunity to explore areas like the Chess and Checkers House, the Plaza, and the Boat House where they may not often get to visit.

The Class of 2021 returned from their Sophomore Class Trip to New York City with a rejuvenated sense of camaraderie, the knowledge that they helped others, and memories to last a lifetime.  Click here to view a photo gallery of the Sophomore Class Trip.
