Eagles Baseball Team Takes Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

The Eagles Varsity Baseball team spent spring break together in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, arriving on Sunday, March 26, and playing four games against teams from around the country.  Coach Selmer planned this trip to hone his team's skills against a variety of opponents, and also to give the players time and opportunity to bond and enjoy some downtime together. The trip accomplished both goals, as the team ate together, practiced, played, and enjoyed a little nerf football on the beach, along with a competitive round of Putt-Putt followed by an evening at Myrtle’s entertainment destination, Broadway at the Beach. Coach Selmer donned his Chef hat and surprised the team with a hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, and bagels one morning, followed by burgers cooked to perfection the following day for lunch.

During the week, the team played four games. On Thursday, March 29, the Eagles topped Elgin Academy from Elgin, Illinois, 5-3. The next day, they fell to Worthington Christian School in Worthington, OH, 7-5. Their final game against Woodrow Wilson High School, in Washington, DC,  was the most exciting, taking place late at night. Due to the game before running longer than expected, the Eagles did not take the field until 10:20 p.m. and had already played a game earlier that day at 11:30 a.m. Parents and fans were not expecting much out of the team for this late-night game. This well coached, prepared team showed their stamina and skill, beating Woodrow Wilson 16-1. Jordan Cann '20, the winning pitcher, allowed just two hits and one run over four innings. Parker Harris '20, Alex Petrocelli '18, and John Warner '20 tripled as part of a 13-hit team effort over four innings. (Luckily for all, the mercy rule ended the game after 4.5 innings) Both Cann and Petrocelli led the charge with 3 RBI’s apiece. It was a fitting end to a great week of training and scrimmage play at the Ripken Complex in Myrtle Beach, SC.
