Indian Creek Senior Cayla Turner Wins Maryland State Poetry Out Loud Title
Indian Creek School is proud to announced that senior Cayla Turner, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, has won the 2018 Poetry Out Loud Title for the State of Maryland. Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation contest created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.
On Saturday, March 10, Cayla competed against eight other finalists at the Baltimore Museum of Art. These finalists were the best of over 8,000 high school students who competed in Maryland this year. Cayla’s recitations of Robert Browning’s “Life in a Love,” Nikki Giovanni’s “The Song of the Feet” and Kenneth Rexroth’s “Discrimination” earned her the state title in three rounds of tough competition. As Maryland’s State Champion, Cayla won a $1,200 cash prize, and Indian Creek won a prize to use towards the School’s poetry program.
Cayla will represent the state of Maryland at the National Poetry Out Loud Finals on April 23-25 at the Lisner Auditorium of George Washington University in Washington, DC. A total of $50,000 in awards and stipends will be awarded at the National Finals.
