Wonders of Indian Creek! Fifth Grade Shares Lessons from Novel "Wonder"

The Indian Creek School Class of 2025 shared a meaningful experience with their classmates, teachers, and parents, as their study of R.J. Palacio's novel Wonder led them to look deeply into themselves and subsequently, to better know their peers. The fifth grade students are enjoying the novel, which has been heralded for it's ability to speak to adolescents, in their Literature classes. Earlier this winter, the class took a trip to the movies to watch the film based on the novel together. This experience provided a foundation for many insightful conversations centered around the themes of the movie: empathy, compassion, acceptance, friendship, and—ultimately—kindness.

Through their research lab classes, the students took what they learned and used the production studio to create "Wonders of ICS" videos, where they interviewed each other in order to get to know each other better and create a foundation for understanding and friendships.

On Tuesday, January 30, parents were invited to a screening of the "Wonders of ICS" films at the Jack and Nancy Becker Center for Performing Arts at Indian Creek Upper School. After the screening, parents, students, and teachers gathered in the atrium for a series of round-table discussions prompted by Wonder "precept posters" that the students had created. On each poster, the students chose an image and a quote from the movie that they each felt best represented themselves. During the debriefing activity, the students all shared their answers to the following three questions: "Why did I choose this precept?," "What does this precept mean to me?," and "How can this precept help me?" Parents and teachers also participated in this meaningful discussion.
