Indian Creek Awarded AFCEA Technology Grant

Indian Creek Lower School is the proud recipient of a 2017 Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) Kickstarter Grant to support programming resources for young students. On Wednesday, December 13, Jessica Morganstern, Vice President, and AFCEA Scientific Education Scholarship Committee Chair, visited the Evergreen Campus to present a check for $3,940 to the School. Students from Pre-Kindergarten 3, Pre-Kindergarten 4, and Kindergarten welcomed Ms. Morganstern and cheered at the award presentation, to show their gratitude and excitement about the grant.

AFCEA Central Maryland’s STEM Kickstarter Program awards grants in the range of $500 - $5,000 to schools in the central Maryland region for initiatives focused on STEM related disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.  The Scientific Education committee reviews grant proposals which describe how the funds will be used, the number of students who will benefit from the use of the funds, and the impact of not receiving funds. The Indian Creek grant proposal, written by first grade teacher Sarah Allen, requested funding for programming resources for young, pre-literate learners aged 3 to 7, specifically, the Cubetto and Ozobot technology. Ms. Allen is excited about the opportunities that these resources will open for our students, sharing that “This gift will allow our youngest learners to learn code before they learn to read!”

This award announcement comes right on the heels of Computer Science Education Week, where Indian Creek Lower School students immersed themselves in the world of coding. The excitement of this gift, which will provide our children with even more engaging opportunities in programming, was tangible in our youngest students – and their teachers!

This is Indian Creek’s third AFCEA grant award. In 2015, the organization granted the Lower School a $3,500 award for programming resources, which helped to purchase the Lego Robotics kits enjoyed by first through fifth grade students, as well as a $3,500 gift to the Upper School which purchased two laptops to drive the 3D printers.  Thank you to the AFCEA for its generous support in sparking excitement for STEM education in Indian Creek students.
