"Holidays of Lights" Assembly Ushers in Celebratory Season for Lower School

Indian Creek Lower School enjoyed a “Holidays of Lights” Assembly on Friday, December 8. Light and music set the theme for our Pre-Kindergarten 3 through sixth grade students, as they learned about Diwali, Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Christmas, Las Posadas, Kwanzaa, and Chinese/Lunar New Year through visual arts, personal stories, and song. The assembly was enhanced by photos and narrations of the varied celebrations of our own Indian Creek families. For each holiday, the students were shown a holiday picture and video montage with student read narrations, and then sang a traditional song. The assembly even included a noisy Chinese New Year parade!

The “light theme” was introduced through the concept of Winter Solstice and family gatherings. Mr. Langrick led the students in a chorus of “Over the River and Through the Woods” to illustrate this practice. Next, the students learned about the Indian holiday Diwali, as the students sang “Deepavali” and added flames to the Diwali candles. Next came a lesson on Hanukkah, as students sang “O Hanukkah” and added flames to a giant menorah. For the lesson on Christmas, students viewed a presentation about various Christmas traditions, and sang “Up on the Housetop,” while flames were added to the advent wreath. Finally, a lesson on Chinese New Year ended with a Parade of Lanterns by the third grade. The assembly closed with a rousing version of “Jingle Bells.” Thank you to Mr. Langrick and all of the students who participated in this meaningful event.

To all members of the Indian Creek community, we wish you a Happy Diwali, Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, and Happy Lunar New Year!
