Senior Niya Harden Honored with NAACP Youth Award
On November 17, 2017, the Anne Arundel County NAACP honored Indian Creek School senior Niya Harden at the 43rd Annual Freedom Fund Banquet. This award recognizes the outstanding achievement and contributions of citizens who have made a difference in our community. The theme for this year’s banquet, held at the Double Tree Hotel in Annapolis, MD, was “The Fight Continues: Steadfast and Immovable”. The keynote speaker for the event was Dr. E. Faye Williams, President and CEO of the National Congress of Black Women, Inc.
Niya was one of three local students honored with the NAACP Youth High School Award, which seeks to spotlight youth who are making a positive difference in the community. At the banquet, Niya also received a Governor’s Citation, and awards from Anne Arundel County officials and House Representatives.
“I’d feel empty inside if I wasn’t using my time to help others,” shared this amazing teen after the ceremony. Niya certainly finds ways to set a good example for her peers and make a positive difference in the world. Niya is president of her chapter of Jack and Jill of America, an organization for mothers and children dedicated to nurturing future African-American leaders by strengthening children through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving and civic duty. Through this group, she organizes soup kitchens, food and clothing drives, and other charitable events. Niya also tutors children for Sarah’s House, a supportive housing program offering emergency shelter and project-based supportive housing with an array of other services for families experiencing homelessness in Anne Arundel County. When not volunteering for these two primary groups, Niya is also active with her Church’s Winter Relief efforts, and serves as a counselor for Indian Creek School’s Summer S.T.A.R.S. program, a summer academic enrichment program for underserved youth in Anne Arundel County.
At Indian Creek School, Niya makes an impact as a positive role-model through her involvement with the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, the Diversity Club, and the Varsity Girls Basketball team. As this incredible youth shared, “The most important thing to me is to make an impact, set an example, and try to make the world better every day.” Congratulations to Niya Harden ’18 for being honored with the NAACP Youth Award.
