Lawrence Fowler '22 Takes First Place at Washington International Horse Show
Congratulations to Indian Creek eighth grade student Lawrence Fowler, who took first place in his race at the at the Washington International Horse Show on Thursday, October 26 at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. Established in 1958, the Washington International Horse Show is one of the most prestigious and entertaining equestrian events in North America. More than 26,000 spectators attend the six-day show, which includes Olympic-level competition along with community and charity events. More than 500 top horses and riders come to D.C. from all over the globe to jump for more than a half a million dollars in prize money.
The pony steeplechase event in which Lawrence competed is run like other professional racing events with a bugler, race caller and photo finish, but in miniature jockey style. Under the guidance of U.S. Pony racing CEO Regina Welsh, Lawrence competed against other young jockeys and snagged a win! In order to qualify for this event, Lawrence needed to race at various racetracks such as Laurel racetrack, various equestrian centers and at the very prestigious Devon Horse show located in Devon, Pennsylvania. Lawrence really enjoys horse racing but has excelled in other equestrian fields such as Jumpers and Hunters. He is Maryland's Horse Show Association's 2017 Champion in Open Jumpers and Reserved Champion in Large Pony Hunters. He even gets to tag along with our very own Mr. Greg Bush as a junior rider with Marlborough Hunt Club. Way to go, Lawrence!
