Alumnus Profile: Ryan Atkinson ’13 Pursues Dream of Medical Degree in Granada

After earning a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Monmouth University this past May, Ryan Atkinson ’13 moved to the islands, but he’s not spending his time on a beach or at a resort; he is pursuing his dream of becoming a physician by studying medicine at St. George’s School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies.

Ryan’s interest in Biology and medicine was sparked by taking AP Biology at Indian Creek School (ICS). “I remember doing a presentation on a disease of our choice. From that task of learning about the disease process and how the body is affected, I became interested in medicine.” Ryan has fond memories of graduating with some of his best friends that he made during his time at Indian Creek: “Fortunately, I am still great friends with all of them, and I am lucky to have developed such strong friendships through ICS.”

While at Monmouth, Ryan also played Division I Lacrosse; he credits former faculty member and lacrosse coach Mike Fretwell with assisting him in pursuing his goal of playing at the highest collegiate level, and more importantly shaping him into a student-athlete who could succeed under the pressure of balancing college athletics and classes.

Ryan has the following advice for Creekers interested in pursuing medicine: “Do not be scared of a path to medicine that isn’t straight. What I mean by that is everyone who comes into medical school has a unique story of how they ended up here. They are not always Harvard graduates right out of college. Embrace the fact that, no matter where you go or what obstacles you encounter, as long as you stay dedicated to your passion, you can find your way there.”
