Indian Creek School Welcomes Athletic Director Frederica Newman

Indian Creek School announced today that Frederica Newman has been named Director of Athletics for the 2023-24 school year.

Newman brings deep knowledge of the local independent school athletics landscape to Indian Creek, an independent school in Crownsville, with 550 students in PK-12.  Indian Creek fields 36+ Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Middle School teams and competes in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) and Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) high school conferences. The school has a strong athletics program with great momentum and has won 28 conference championships over the past 10 years, holding the current IAAM Basketball, Lacrosse, and MIAA Baseball titles.

Newman comes to Indian Creek from Concordia Prep High School in Towson, where she oversaw 30+ competitive middle and high school teams. Prior to this, she served as Athletic Director at Institute of Notre Dame (IND) in Baltimore and Assistant Athletic Director at St. Vincent Pallotti High School in Laurel.  She has coached both lacrosse and basketball at IND, Pallotti, and the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore.

Newman was named 2022 IAAM Athletic Director of the Year and is a Registered Athletic Administrator through the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. She has been appointed Vice President of IAAM for 2023-24. She currently serves on the MIAA Executive Committee, the IAAM Competition Committee, is MIAA Technology Chair, and chairs both the IAAM and MIAA Indoor Track and Track committees.

Newman holds her Juris Doctor degree from University of Maryland School of Law and worked as an attorney before shifting to the athletics arena. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Management from Goucher College, where she also played collegiate lacrosse and basketball.

Lacrosse has always been a big part of Newman’s life, as she has served as Diversity and Inclusion Representative for the US Lacrosse Chesapeake Chapter and Head Coach of the ULAX Lacrosse Club in Annapolis.

Newman’s ability to connect with students while seeing the big picture of a robust PK-12 school environment is one reason that she is a great fit for Indian Creek.

“During her visit with us, Freddie demonstrated an ability to engage with all constituencies, a connection with ICS’s focus on well-being for all its students, and a pride in athletics as a force for good. We’re thrilled to welcome her to the Creek,” shared Head of School Booth Kyle.

Newman is equally thrilled to join the Eagles Athletics program, saying that Indian Creek “feels like the right fit.”  Her familiarity with the schools in the IAAM and MIAA leagues has bolstered this excitement.  “I’ve paid close attention to Indian Creek as a school that has been quite successful in many different sports over the last few years. I’ve always been attracted to the philosophy of a holistic approach to education. I see that in Indian Creek. The school is very clear in their mission to provide a place that supports well-being of students first.  I’m excited to help take ICS to where we want go competitively, while making sure that our student athletes are healthy and happy.”

Newman’s appointment culminates a nation-wide Athletic Director search which included over 140 applicants, seven finalists, and three campus visits.  A search team comprising Indian Creek Trustees, administrators, faculty, coaches, and students led the process. Current Director of Athletics Jason Werner shared his intention to return to the classroom earlier this spring after two years of service leading the Eagles Athletics program. During his tenure, the school added three Varsity teams (Golf, Swimming, and Track and Field) and won five conference titles (Baseball, Girls Basketball, Girls Lacrosse x2, JV Boys Soccer).

Indian Creek thanks Mr. Werner for his leadership and welcomes Ms. Newman, along with her husband Lloyd Jones and daughters Laila and Colette to the ICS community.
