County Leaders Experience Meaningful Education Day Learning at Indian Creek

Indian Creek welcomed five leaders from Anne Arundel County to campus as part of Leadership Anne Arundel (LAA) Education Day on Thursday, January 12.  Education Day is a full day for county leaders, who began the day with a visit to Anne Arundel Community College, followed by a series of meetings in different locations focused on learning about the state of education in the area. Indian Creek was the only private school on the schedule. During the morning visit, Indian Creek welcomed Ally Butler from Hospice of the Chesapeake, Sean Hammer from the Department of Transportation Maryland Aviation Administration, David Hufnagel from Shore United Bank, Jon McGowan from Liff, Walsh & Simmons LLC, and Rey Roach from Anne Arundel County Central Services Risk Management.  The ICS site visit helped to highlight the benefits of independent school education to these local leaders, and helped them learn about Indian Creek.

The LAA participants were welcomed by Head of School Booth Kyle, Associate Head of School Eliza McLaren, and Director of College Counseling (and LAA planning committee member and alumna) Maggie Melson. Participants then joined Director of Curriculum and Instruction as well as four Upper School students, Julian Butler '23, Beth Christie '24, Connor Welter '23, and Madison Yates '23, to engage in a project based learning experience focused on how reduce plastics in the Chesapeake Bay and oceans. Following this mini-project, the guests utilized the School's Innovation Lab to make an emblem representing a symbol about Anne Arundel County’s efforts to decrease plastics in the Bay.

After leaving ICS, the group traveled to the maker space at the Anne Arundel County Public Library, where they created buttons representing what they learned about ICS during their visit. Highlights of the ICS experience captured on these buttons include: "Grow" because as a PK-12 school, students can grow up at Indian Creek and because "ICS is growing"; "Include" because ICS provides a learning environment where every individual feels welcome and included; and "Understand" because ICS students are encouraged to ask questions and to understand the world around them and also because the School's curriculum is innovative and educators at ICS strive to understand each student well.

The visitors noted how happy students are at Indian Creek, were impressed with how well the faculty and staff members know the students. This visit provided a valuable way for county leaders to learn more about independent schools and to increase awareness about the opportunities Indian Creek provides to students.
