Class of 2024 Embraces Cardboard Boat Race Tradition
The Class of 2024 experienced an Indian Creek rite of passage last week, as they competed in the 18th annual ICS Cardboard Boat Race challenge!
This event, which typically occurs in the spring of students' eighth grade year, had to be cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While students created small-scale boats in their virtual eighth grade science class that year, they missed the fun and camaraderie that comes with the full boat race challenge. The ICS faculty wanted to make sure that they were able to experience the excitement of the Boat Races, so they incorporated the event into this year's fall class activities. Dean of Grade 10 Tonya Montgomery shared with sophomore families at a Boat Race Awards Ceremony on Friday, September 24, that "It was especially meaningful for this class to experience this event. We keep an awards plaque hanging in the school that lists the winner of every boat race going back almost 20 years. It felt incomplete that there was a gap where the Class of 2024 should go. Now we can look at the plaque and feel great remembering how much fun the kids had today!"
The Class of 2024 spot on the trophy will feature this year's "Unsinkable Molly Brown" Award, presented to the overall winner of the boat race challenge. After five heats, a championship race with three finalists, and even a bonus round (featuring Upper School Principal Eliza McLaren and DEI Director Doug McCuiston challenging students to a final duel), the Lightning McQueen boat, captained by Blake Pettis, Hunter Walls, and Grey Winer was still going strong.
While Lightning McQueen emerged at the top of the pack, this year's races had many strong contenders - (and also many not as strong contenders.! The sophomores tackled this challenge with enthusiasm, motivation, and school spirit, and it showed in their final projects as a fleet of sea-worthy vessels lined the shore of the Sherwood Forest Beach along the Severn River. After a morning of fun, the students and parents came together to celebrate the day at an Awards Ceremony.
