Indian Creek School Breaks Ground on State-of-the-Art Facility, Primed to Deliver an Innovative Education to Generations of Students
On Monday, March 1, three-year-old Parker Mannix (wearing his “Bob the Builder” construction costume) grabbed a shovel, climbed to the top of a pile of dirt, and participated in a ceremony to officially kick off construction for Indian Creek School’s highly-anticipated campus unification project. Parker, who attends Pre-K3 at Indian Creek School, was enchanted by the construction equipment and hard-hats at the site where he will attend school in August. Parker, along with hundreds of Indian Creek students (current – and future), will benefit from the School’s hallmark excellent college-preparatory education rooted in close student-teacher connections. This experience will be further enhanced by state-of-the-art classroom spaces, Learning Lab, athletics and performing arts facilities, playgrounds, and more, when Indian Creek students from Pre-K through grade 12 will come together on the renovated 114-acre campus.
Indian Creek School held an official ground breaking ceremony to kick-off construction for its campus unification project on Monday, March 1, at the School’s current Upper School at 1130 Anne Chambers Way in Crownsville, just north of Annapolis. School leaders, student and parent ambassadors, Trustees, alumni, and family members of the school’s founders gathered together with representatives from Southway Builders, Aurora Architecture, Proutt Consulting, and Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman, to pause and reflect on this pivotal moment in the history of Indian Creek School. While the ground breaking ceremony was an intimate event in order to adhere to gathering and distancing guidelines, Indian Creek School looks forward to holding a community-wide ribbon cutting celebration in August, when the project is complete.
At the start of the ceremony, Head of School Booth Kyle reflected on the importance of this moment: “Indian Creek School has always been a school rooted in connections and relationships, where you can be who you are, discover who you want to be, and become who you are meant to be...We are building a new Indian Creek School with the magic of our Founders - the dogged belief in the mission of our staff and Trustees, the support of friends, and the success of our students."
Board Chair Chris Mannix ’91 then spoke about how the effort has been community-wide to provide a school campus that reflects and enhances the excellent teaching and learning that Indian Creek provides - and will continue to provide for generations to come. County Executive Steuart Pittman congratulated the Indian Creek community on this milestone, and then Student Government President Nick Menendez ’22 thanked everyone involved in the project for making this school enhancement possible. Following the remarks, attendees participated in the ceremonial “breaking of the ground,” modified into individual dig boxes placed on the School’s sidewalk to allow for distancing and safe accessibility for all guests.
This project is the final step in Indian Creek’s strategic plan to bring all grades together on its 114-acre Crownsville Road Campus. - The project began with the construction of its $4.15 Million Eagles Athletics Complex featuring two turf fields, one Bermuda grass playing field, one practice field, six tennis courts, and one natural grass baseball field, lights to provide extended playing time, 500-seat capacity bleachers, and spaces for the community to gather in 2016.
- In 2017, the School moved grades 7 & 8 from the Lower and Middle School Campus on Evergreen Road to the Upper School building.
- In 2019, Indian Creek's Evergreen Campus was sold to Rockbridge Academy, as a major step towards unifying the Lower and Upper Schools on one campus. Since then, Indian Creek School and Rockbridge Academy’s lower schools have co-occupied the Evergreen campus in different parts of the building, with ICS renting the space while preparing the Upper School Campus to welcome all students in Pre-K through grade 12.
- In October 2020, Indian Creek added Eagle Dome - a dynamic facility, containing 27,000 additional square feet of indoor athletics space. The Eagle Dome provides an air-supported enclosure over four tennis courts, creating versatile indoor space to be used for tennis, basketball, volleyball, and any outdoor sports team during inclement weather. The dome has been invaluable this school year in particular, allowing more indoor space where students can be together adhering to physical distancing guidelines while the school offers in-person and hybrid learning options. The school also opened “David’s Court,” an outdoor basketball court for Middle School students in memory of ICS alumnus David Snyder.
In August 2021, all Indian Creek School students, from Pre-K3 through grade 12 will unite on one campus, representing a moment of arrival towards the culmination of the School’s first 50 years, and a launching point for the School’s next 50 years.
