Alumni Spotlight: Sunny Chhatani '14

During his years at Indian Creek School (ICS), Sunny Chhatani ’14 learned how to work independently, actively sought to gain knowledge (passed on to him by his awesome ICS teachers), and always challenged himself to learn more. “ICS set me up for a successful career in college, both academically and athletically.”

Since graduating from Saint Mary’s College of Maryland (where he was a four-year starter on the Seahawks Men’s Soccer Team) with an economics degree, Sunny has been working as a financial analyst at Towne Park and serving as the Chief of Staff at a startup company called Nela, an artisanal organic Panela sugar from Colombia, which has grown to have 50 partners around the DMV, including grocery stores, coffee shops, distilleries, and bakeries.

For Sunny, getting to where he is now is rooted firmly in his time at ICS which, as he puts it, changed his life: “I am not exaggerating: Indian Creek did change my life. Ms. Ruth Shrum made sure I picked the right college, which lead to an amazing college experience. The teachers at ICS always pushed [me] to the limit. They genuinely cared for [my] education and were always willing to stay after hours for questions (I did this all the time). The smaller classes required me to pay attention and to participate in class. As a result, I was inclined to do the readings prior to the start of class so I could be well-prepared.”

Sunny has the following advice for his fellow Creekers: “Enjoy your time at Indian Creek. Even though ICS may challenge you to points that you are not used to, it is all worth it once you move to the next chapter of your life. Also, take advantage of all the resources that are available at ICS (sports, facilities, after-school activities, teachers, college counseling, etc.).”
