HàVi Albert Retains ICS Spelling Bee Championship Title

The 2021 version of the Indian Creek School Spelling Bee may have looked a little bit different from years past, but many important aspects were quite familiar: Mr. McCormick carefully enunciated the words from the podium in the Upper School auditorium wearing his green ‘spelling bee’ sweater vest, the audience of sixth through eighth grade students and faculty remained impressed by the words the contestants spelled with seemingly effortless accuracy, and a final showdown between seventh grader Izzy Sussman and eighth grader HàVi Albert could have gone on for hours.  After an exciting final round which culminated with the winning word “quarry,” HàVi repeated her victory and was named the 2021 Indian Creek School Spelling Bee Champion.

While Izzy earned the runner-up spot in this year's virtual competition, third place went to sixth grader Mide Aderoba. (Fun fact: This is the third year in a row that the top three spots were taken by a student in each of sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.)

Joining HàVi, Izzy, and Mide in this year’s Championship Bee were classroom winners Grady Crapster ’27, Harrison Crapster ’26, Arabelle Gemmell ’25, Devlin Guttridge ’27, Lukas Hummer ’26, Maddy Hunt ’26, Scarlett McNelis ’27, Alexandra Mirarchi ’25, Sophia O’Connell ’25. Congratulations to all of our competitors!

Special thanks to Spelling Bee coordinator Becca Derry, as well as this year's judges Ab Bear and Anne Crossman Engles '97.
Good luck to HàVi as she represents ICS at the Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee on February 27!
