Fourth Grade Explores Circulatory System through Blood Lab

"Squeamish" is a philosophy unknown to the ICS fourth grade, as the students dove right in to their Blood Lab this week! For their first science unit of the year, the Class of 2029 is studying the circulatory system. To help the students learn about all of the important elements of blood, Mrs. DeBuse challenged her students to create "blood in a bottle" models, using common (non-organic) materials to represent each component.

The students built their blood cells using cheerios with red food coloring for the red blood cells, mini-marshmallows to represent white blood cells, and purple pom-poms to illustrate the platelets. Fluid was added to the mixture to demonstrate the ease with which blood is able to complete functions like transporting oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. The projects were created in clear plastic water bottles so that the resulting fluid could be observed and admired by all. Way to go fourth grade!
