Fifth Grade Water Displacement Lab Immerses Students in Science

On Wednesday, September 16, and Thursday, September 16, the ICS Class of 2028 explored properties of water displacement with a very wet demonstration. Our fifth grade scientists calculated the volume of water in a large vessel, and observed "displacement" (via a pipe sending overflow to a smaller vessel) as brave volunteer, Phoebe '27, submerged herself in the name of science. Mrs. Alexander's students then measured the amount of displaced water and used their scientific knowledge to calculate volume and density for each stage of the experiment. Virtual learners had a front row seat to the experiment through a laptop camera, and shared their observations with the class in real time. This lab brought the formula p=m/V to life in a memorable way for the fifth grade!
