Katie Spencer '22 Wins Regional Poetry Out Loud Competition - Advances to State Finals!

Indian Creek sophomore Katie Spencer wowed the judges at last Saturday's Poetry Out Loud regional competition, winning the Regional Title and advancing to the Maryland State Finals.

As the Indian Creek School Champion, Katie represented ICS against the top poetry performers from 9 area schools including Pocomoke Hight School, Severn School, Saints Peter and Paul High School, Broadneck, and Severna Park High School. Katie recited Michelle Y. Burke's "Diameter" in the first round, "No I wasn't Meant to Love and Be Loved," by Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib in Round II, and "The Universe as Primal Scream," by Tracy K. Smith, as her final piece. Katie was cheered on by her family, friends, and ICS teacher Mr. Gerry Connolly.

While Katie's win is exciting for Indian Creek, it was not a surprise to our community. "Katie was so strong in our school competition. It's her embodiment of what the poems mean and her ability to convey that meaning to her audience that really makes her stand out," shared Upper School Interim Head Matt McCormick.

Katie will represent the Chesapeake Region at the Maryland State Poetry Out Loud Finals, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and The Poetry Foundation, on Saturday, March 7, at Baltimore Center Stage. Katie is the second Creeker to win the regional title in 4 years, which is a remarkable accomplishment for our school. Congratulations Katie!
